Yesterday’s Try a Trade day at the Swan Trade Training Centre was a huge success with the 90 students from Swan Christian College and other local schools who attended the event.

Try a Trade is a hands-on event that specifically focuses on giving Year 10 students a chance to try the three trades on offer at the Swan Trade Training Centre: Building and Construction, Electrotechnology and Engineering (Heavy Fabrication).

In the Electrical area students spent time in our motor control section wiring the control circuit for a DOL motor, and wired a single light and switch upstairs in our practical area. The Carpentry program saw students making a beautiful Jarrah cheese board and using nail guns (under supervision) to help construct the framework for a tiny house. In the Engineering workshop, students were given a choice to construct a sheet metal toolbox or develop some welding skills while constructing a metal dice. A couple of students were able to work fast enough to complete both projects.

We were blessed to have Swan alumni Sophie O’Doherty attend the event as a special guest. Sophie graduated from the Swan Trade Training Centre last year and is currently completing an Auto Electrician Apprenticeship with Komatsu. Sophie spoke to the students about her time with us and busted myths about females in the trades. We were so happy to see Sophie and we are grateful to have been given the opportunity to impact her journey.

Swan Christian College students will be able to apply for the Swan Trade Training Centre through the normal Year 11 subject selection process that will take place later this year.

Students who are not currently enrolled at Swan Christian College and are considering applying for a place at the Swan Trade Training Centre are encouraged to contact our enrolments team on 08 9374 8300 or at enrolments@swan.wa.edu.au.
