During Week 4 Ms Joanna Walden took her Year 10 Food Technology class out on a camping cook up. When the class arrived at the classroom they collected all the equipment they would need and carried it out to a remote spot on the school oval. Using a camping gas stove, they gently heated some oil and each group put all the ingredients into a zip lock bag. The ingredients were mixed around in the bag (to prevent mess and creating lots of washing up).
From the dough, students rolled small donut holes and shallow fried them on the camping stove. Once cooked they were rolled in a cinnamon sugar. This was a great fun activity , building relationships and learning new ways of cooking.
Here’s the recipe for Donut Holes, which you could try making at home:
Ingredients
• 1 cup flour
• 1 tsp. baking powder
• 1 Tbsp. sugar (or more)
• 1/4 tsp. salt
• 1 Tbsp. butter
• 1/3 cup milk
Instructions
1. Mix dry ingredients, blend in butter, stir in milk until dough is soft.
2. Knead a bit and roll into bite size balls.
3. Heat enough oil (we used peanut oil) to cover 4 dough balls, keep Jetboil on simmer.
4. Put dough balls in (4 at a time) and roll them around in the oil occasionally. Remove when golden brown and roll in cinnamon & sugar immediately.
5. Serve warm or cold.
