On 25 November, 23 students competed in the Alicia Molik Schools Challenge tennis tournament at the beautiful Robertson Park Tennis Club in North Perth. This was the first time our College has officially brought a team to an interschool tennis event, and there were some seriously talented tennis players from Swan Christian College who attended.
Students such as Marcel (Year 10), Joshua (Year 10), Jack (Year 10), Ben (Year 10), Charlotte (Year 10), Michela (Year 10), Austin (Year 8) and Thomas (Year 8) really matched it with state-level tennis players from many specialist tennis schools.
The format of the competition was mixed teams of four who would play one doubles match with the same sex, and then one mixed doubles match. The first half of the day was played as a round-robin, and then there were A and B grade Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals and then the Grand Final.
Our mixed team of Jack (Year 10), Ben (Year 10), Charlotte (Year 10) and Michela (Year 10) made it to the Grand Final of the B grade group, narrowly losing to Newman College. This was an outstanding achievement.
Also of note was the mixed team of Joshua (Year 10), Marcel (Year 10), Annaleigh (Year 10) and Emily (Year 10) qualifying for the A grade Quarter Finals, losing to the eventual A grade champions.
All students who attended showed courage, often having to face extremely fast serves from state champion tennis players on the other side of the net. With another interschool tennis event planned for Term 1 2021, our College will be stronger for this experience and anyone who is interested in playing tennis at an interschool level can contact Mr Dallin on ben.dallin@swan.wa.edu.au
