We’re thrilled to celebrate Amelia W of Year 11, whose talent has propelled her into the finals of The Lester Prize (Youth), one of Australia’s most prestigious portraiture awards. This recognition places her among the nation’s top young artists, an incredible honour considering the competition’s stature just behind the renowned Archibald Prize.
Amelia’s entry, a poignant portrait of her grandfather, stood out for its emotional depth and technical skill. Explaining her choice, Amelia shares, “I decided to draw my grandfather because he is a large inspiration in my life, and he has taught me so much that I wanted to give back to him. This artwork is a tribute to him and how much he has shaped my life.”
Despite the competition’s fierce nature, Amelia remains humble and grateful for the opportunity. “Whilst I have not won the Lester Prize yet, I have just been accepted which is an amazing honour. I am very excited to share my love for art with others,” she reflects.
The journey to this point hasn’t been solitary. Amelia credits her success to her teachers and mentors, stating, “Mrs Mongony and Mrs Tonkin are absolutely amazing people, artists, and teachers. They have both shaped me through this journey, helping me on every step of the way, and I am extremely grateful for everything they do. As this was my first charcoal, they were both extremely supportive of me, which has helped me to create the piece that I did.”
Amelia’s work will be displayed at the WA Museum Booja Bardip in the Old Gaol Exhibition Space, with the exhibition running from 12 April to 14 July. This presents a wonderful opportunity for the public to engage with the work of one of Australia’s emerging artistic talents.
Join us in applauding Amelia for her remarkable achievement. Her dedication, passion, and gratitude towards those who have guided her reflect the heart of a true artist. Well done, Amelia!
