Telethon Kids Institute and UWA study

Do you have a dog and child in Pre-Primary to Year 3?

The research team at Telethon Kids Institute need YOUR help to discover the best & most creative ways the family dog can improve children’s health and development.

What is the study about?

The project is trialling different methods of encouraging physical activity and play in children (aged 5 to 8) through playing and walking with the family dog. The findings will help researchers and policy makers understand the impact of dog ownership on children’s physical activity and social-emotional development.

Who is conducting the study?

The study is being conducted by the Telethon Kids Institute under the leadership of Assoc/Prof Hayley Christian. Other members of the research team include Assoc/Prof Leanne Lester, University of Western Australia; Ms Elizabeth Wenden and Ms Michelle Ng, Telethon Kids Institute.

Is this research approved?

Approval to conduct this research (RA/4/1/7417) has been provided by The Human Research Ethics Office at the University of Western Australia. Ms Valeri Gould (AISWA Managing Director) has also been advised of our request.

  • There are waitlists for Kindergarten and Year 7, 2025
  • There are also waitlists for Kindergarten and Year 7, 2026
  • We encourage you to submit applications at least two years in advance.
