Please join us in congratulating Tariq and Luke (Year 9) who have been chosen as finalists in the Youth Black Swan Prize for Portraiture – WA’s only Portrait Prize.

30 finalists aged from 12 to 17 years from over 70 schools across Australia have been chosen for the prize. Over 200 youth artists entered the prestigious portrait prize this year. The youth finalists’ works will be on public display from 29 October – 23 November 2018 in Tower 1Brookfield Place (125 St Georges Tce, Perth).

Winners of the youth prizes will be announced on 7 November 2018. A total prize pool of over $5,500 is up for grabs with students in Years 7 – 12 awarded in three age group categories with winners receiving gift vouchers and the two runner-ups receiving art packs from Perth art supplier, Oxlades. Schools are also eligible to win half or full day workshops with a professional artist, sponsored by the Squire Patton Boggs Youth Art Foundation.

The artists were invited to submit portraits of an Australian, or Australians, that they respect or admire, or a self-portrait. There was a high prevalence of self-portraits in this year’s submissions. Other works featured family members, mentors, and friends who the artists admire revealing inspiring stories of struggle over personal adversity.

Tariq’s and Luke’s artworks will also be on display at the Visual Arts Showcase exhibition on 17 and 18 September.
