Our first Parent Open Meeting with our new Parent Committee, chaired by Ken Carter, was an informative and enjoyable one for those who were able to attend.
Following informal chats over soup in the Maali Room, the formal meeting took place in the Maali Mia Theatre, where in addition to being able to meet new members of the committee, parents were introduced to the online Parent Lounge and Student Café which will both open from the beginning of Term 3. Mr Gerhard May has worked tirelessly to help staff get their data ready for these portals so that information is available for parents and students. His presentation was both informative and entertaining. These portals, combined with the recently released College App, are designed to improve communication between all members of our community and we look forward now to the rollout next term.
This presentation was followed by our Head of Science, Mr Aedan Lennon, who spoke about the work that is being done to develop STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) integrated programs and thinking across the College. The team he is leading is working across Junior, Middle and Senior Schools to challenge students to be more involved in these subject areas through practical and exciting projects. Through this, students also have opportunities to consider career paths that they may not have in the past. Watch for more information and future displays of work in this area.
The meeting discussed the opportunities for parents to join the fund raising team that supports the Parent Committee, and advised that at their next meeting they would receive recommendations on spending some of the existing funds raised over previous years.
As the meeting concluded, parents were enthusiastic about presentations from within the College at upcoming meetings, and this will be a focus in future planning.
