In Week 10 last term the Year 7 and 8 Language students invited students from Junior School to our campus for Harmony Day.
Harmony Day is an initiative that celebrates cultural diversity, and its official date coincides with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The students used this day as a chance to highlight the cultural diversity we have at our College, and to take the opportunity to demonstrate the Christian values that language learning promotes – these being kindness, humility, hospitality and above all else, love.
The Middle School students engaged the Junior School students in various activities through the languages they were learning. In small groups, the students teamed up to play Twister, Hurricane and What’s the time Mr Wolf? They also practiced their origami on authentic patterned papers from Japan, and taught each other how to ask and answer “How are you?” in different languages.
After the activities, the students had the chance to interview two Japanese visitors, and hear them speak about their experiences of ‘culture shock’ in Australia. The older students took great pride in welcoming the younger students into the Middle School.
A massive thank-you must be extended to Mrs Trish Knoblich, Mrs Lorraine Gentry and Miss Aviana Francis who helped to organise the day.
