We’re thrilled to announce that we have received a 2023 Woolworths Junior Landcare Grant for our project, Maali Bush Tucker Garden.
Swan Christian College is one of 1,107 primary schools and early learning centres across Australia to receive a Woolworths Junior Landcare grant to help grow our next generation of environmental champions.
Our ELC learners (Kindy and Pre Primary) are looking forward to having a hands-on learning experience to appreciate diversity and cultivate
environmental responsibility outside the traditional classroom setting. Our students are involved in teamwork to plant, care for, cultivate, harvest,
eat and use the Bush Tucker they grow and encouraging children’s agency.
The expected environmental and educational outcomes of the project is to contribute and connect to the land and the Noongar cultural heritage of the Swan area. By working with Bush Tucker plants, students learn about the aboriginal history and significance of these plants and develop a sense of cultural identity and pride.
This hands-on experience fosters a sense of stewardship and responsibility for the environment, helping students to become active and responsible citizens.
In addition, the garden will promote confidence and involvement in learning. By working in teams and actively participating in the growing process, students develop their curiosity, inquiry, creativity, and pride in their work. They also become effective communicators by learning to share their knowledge and experiences with others.
