Many parents have reported excessive screen time as the number one health concern affecting kids, especially now in the hyperconnected world we live in. The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends that there should be no screen time at all for children under two, less than an hour a day for children aged from two to five, and less than two hours for five to 17 year olds. However, these guidelines have been disputed by experts and often ignored by families. Parents must play an important role in modelling a positive approach to using screens, and assisting children to navigate the content they access.
Some of our Year 9 and 10 Media students under Dr Owen Beck have been learning about drone videography and photography. They recently shot and edited some amazing footage of the golf course of The Vines Resort. Well done team! Let us know what you think of the videos at the link below!
Charlie's always on the lookout for people with good ideas to help students cope with school, and life in general.
What an amazing morning we had in Kindy B recently! Mrs Madzivire and Mrs Kinnunen came and shared with us more about Japan. We met Jacob who is a Samurai warrior. He showed us his blunt katana (sword) and we watched the First Kata. He also showed us his first Katana which is made of wood and called a Bokutou. Children can start learning to be a Samurai from the age of 3.
This term, students of Year 3 and 4 have started a gardening club with the help of resident green thumb, Mrs Bennett. Students have been learning how to sprout seeds, transplant seedlings, and grow plants from cuttings. Everyone is very impressed with the results!
On Friday 11 November the Year 6 boys competed in the Elite basketball carnival. They played a total of 8 games including finals and were undefeated all day. What an outstanding result! Congratulations to Jak R who got MVP of the tournament and congratulations to the boys for winning the cup in 2022.
The Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal has a significant impact on the community by helping those in need, and Kmart believes that it is crucial to educate young people on the concept of giving back.
On Friday 25 November the Year 10 Business students marketed and sold Powerade and G Fuel energy drinks to fans watching the students versus teachers soccer match. The Business students had researched the most popular energy drinks brands on the market, then sourced a local supplier for energy drinks, purchased at the most reasonable prices to maximise their profits. These talented young entrepreneurs homework clearly paid off when they accumulated $170 worth of product sales during just one break. They also sponsored the half-time drinks, offering free G Fuel to the Year 10 soccer team. The students clearly benefitted from the superior refreshment, turning a 0-0 score line into a handsome 3-1 win for the students, which seemed to indicate an advantage from consuming this popular new energy drink!
Our Year 7 student, Skyelah D V, competed in the National Vaulting Championships in Sydney during the October school holidays, representing WA at the highest levels. She has progressed so high up the levels that she is no longer competing in her own age group, but against adults in open competition, with 15 being the next age up in her individual competition.
Year 8 student, Matthew A competed in the State Final U20 pe Fencing competition on Saturday 12 November and took home the bronze medal.
The Year 9 Extension class has been working with the Energy Club of WA all year to have a look at the different aspects and career options open in this industry. The year finished off with a Student Expo Day at ECU Joondalup on Friday 25 November. Our students' knowledge, creativity skills, and critical thinking skills were pitted against students from other schools. They were challenged in areas such as using knowledge gained from the sessions through the year, to brain storming, solving problems using real world examples, using VR goggles to explore offshore oil rigs (a particular favourite!) and using PPE. One of teams, The Salamanders, beat 57 other teams from over 12 schools to finish 1st on the day. Such a fantastic achievement! Their amazing first place prize is a helicopter underwater scape training and subsea survival experience from ERGT. Congratulations to all our teams.
The Base at Belmont, YMCA have organised many activities for young people aged 12 - 18 and 16 - 25 over the December - January holiday break such as swimming, table tennis, air hockey, Xbox, PS4, trampolining, music and movies. Some activities have limited spots so signing up is required. For a timetable of events please have a look the calendar: YMCA School Holiday Calendar
Matthew 5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers. Day one, 1 December, of the advent calendar written by Rob Furlong, senior pastor of the Woodvale Baptist Church, presents the topic of peace and peacemakers. In contrast to the peace and joy we sing about at Christmas time, Rob points out that currently 22 wars are being waged across the world, on 5 different continents, resulting in war-related deaths of 120,151 people in 2022. This is staggering! Isaiah 9:6 presents the prophecy of a child being born, almighty God, Prince of Peace. We see the fulfilment of this prophecy in the birth of Christ celebrated each year at Christmas. Traditionally this is a time when people make an effort to come together and share in festive meals and joyful gatherings. However, for many across the world, this is not a festive and joyful time as families and friends experience fractious relationships, hard financial times, work commitments or the enemy of distance keeping loved ones apart.
2022 has been a productive year for the Swan Christian College Parent Committee, and we are grateful for the support of the College community. This year, funds have been raised through various events, including the Mother's and Father's Day Stalls, Sausage Sizzles at Sports Carnivals, and Gilbert's Fresh Support our School Program.
We are very excited to inform our parent community that the College has commenced substantial renovations across both the Junior and Senior school. Swan Christian College has joined in partnership with Site Architects and Swan Group to embark on multiple block upgrades, ranging from mechanical services, electrical, lighting and data infrastructure, plumbing services, roofing/ceiling installations and audio-visual equipment.
Thank you for your ongoing support of Gilberts Support our Schools program. On 7 December, Mrs Anne Opferkuch, Support our Schools Program Coordinator from Gilberts Fresh Markets, visited Swan Christian College to hand over a cheque for $887 that has been raised through Gilberts SOS Program this year. College Principal Dr Darnelle Pretorius and Christian Life Committee Chairperson Mrs Sue Luce received the cheque and thanked Mrs Opferkuch for their support.
Christmas is quickly approaching and with it comes exciting events and celebrations. This year, the College wishes to continue spreading this joy to families in the local community who are experiencing difficult circumstances. We are partnering with local registered charity, New Life Welfare (WA) Inc, to provide Christmas hampers/emergency relief for people in need who live in Midland and surrounding suburbs. As part of their Service Learning for the year, students will be helping to collect items and pack the hampers. Please support them by donating items to this cause.
