Mobile Phone Separation Anxiety – A School TV Report

The use of mobile phones and technology in schools has been a highly debated topic internationally, including in Australia. Almost all states and territories in Australia, have implemented full bans on mobile phones during class, recess, and lunch times, while allowing students to carry their phones during travel to and from school.

2023 NAIDOC Day Celebrations

NAIDOC Day on Monday 19 June at Swan Christian College was an unforgettable celebration! Our Junior School and Senior School students participated in some activities relating to NAIDOC Day. We were privileged to have Gina Williams and Guy Ghouse as our special assembly presenters. Singer-songwriter Gina Williams and Guitarist and collaborator, Guy Ghouse, who together and individually have won multiple WA music awards, and Gina, who was awarded Australian of the Year in 2017. Their mesmerizing performance showcased the power of music and storytelling, blending ancient language and contemporary sounds.

Year 10 Student Wins National Sharemarket Game

Congratulations to Alri M, Year 10 Business and Enterprise student, for becoming the ASX School Sharemarket Game National Champion 2023 and Claire E, who placed in the top 40 in WA, in the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) game.

Pre Primarys Dive into Adventure at AQWA

Our Pre Primary students had a blast at AQWA! They explored sea creatures, learned about the ocean, and had an incredible day with their teachers. The aquarium showcased vibrant marine life, captivating the children's wonder.

Impressive Debut for Year 9 Student at Judo Championship

Daena M, a talented Year 9 student, made her debut appearance at the 2023 National Judo Championship, leaving a lasting impression on the judo community and came in 5th place. Competing in the cadets U52kg weight category as well as the Junior Women's U52kg weight category, Daena showcased her skills and determination on the mat.

Young Netball Stars Shine in Gingin

Some of the Year 7 girls participated in a successful carnival at Gingin on 18 June, winning all five matches, including the Grand Final. The South Midlands Netball Association recently hosted an exciting Round Robin Competition on at the Bendigo Sporting Complex in Gingin. The U13 Division comprised four teams: South Midlands, Bullsbrook Flames, Belmont Hurricanes, and Kulcha Teens.

Students Run Toward Success at ACC Carnival

On Thursday 1 June, students from Year 7 Year 12 represented Swan at the ACC Interschool Cross Country Carnival. Students who had finished in the top 6 places for their division at our House Cross Country Carnival were selected for the team. Prior to the ACC carnival there were training sessions twice a week before school. I would like to give a special thank you to Mr Dallin and Mr Ellis for training the team again this year.

Breakfast Club Pause in Week 10

Please be aware that Breakfast Club will not be running during Week 10 (the week starting Monday, 26 June) of this term. The program will resume in Week 2 of Term 3.

Year 10 and 12 Students Connect with French Pen Pals

On Friday 2 June, the Year 10 and 12 French students at Swan participated in a Skype session with their pen pal school, Lyce Pablo Neruda in Grenoble, France near the Alps. Their pen pals study English as a second language.

Year 9 Students Shine at Bali International Football Tournament

We are delighted to share the incredible achievements of two of our talented Year 9 students, Samuel A and Benjamin G, who recently had the privilege of representing Western Australia at the Bali International Football Tournament. This remarkable opportunity was made possible through their participation in the state's Talent Support Program, which aims to nurture and showcase the skills of our budding athletes.

Camp Australia – July School Holidays

Camp Australia will not be running the Rocketeers Program on our campus during the first two weeks of the July School Holidays (3 14 July) due to significant earthworks taking place on campus in preparation for the construction of the new Wild Play Zone in the Junior School. The Rocketeers Program will run on our campus during the third week of the school holidays (17 21 July) and Monday 24 July 2023 (Pupil Free Day).

Connect and Learn – Inclusive Education Team Hosts Morning Tea

What a turnout we had on Tuesday, 23 May when the Inclusive Education Team hosted a community morning tea. Ms Julia Aland, Dean of Inclusive Education Junior School and Acting Head of Curriculum, and Ms Jody Sims, College Psychologist, gave incredible insights into how we can support our students.

Developing a Sense of Belonging in Students

In a recent article, Professor Geoff Masters (2023) identified two challenges for the reform of school education. Better preparing students for their future and ensuring every student learns successfully were deemed to be urgent global imperatives. In these challenges is recognition of the personal, holistic, and developmental nature of learning. Traditionally the development of cognitive skills is pitted against a vision of education that attends to the ambience of the learning environment to promote well-being and moral development.

AVCAT Scholarships

AVCAT scholarships, including the Long Tan Bursary, are tertiary scholarships for the children and grandchildren of Australian ex-serving veterans. Scholarships are $4000$6000 per year for three years.

Year 9 Students Inspired by Perth Fashion Designer

Friday marked an exciting occasion as Perth fashion designer Karen Elizabeth Young visited the textiles room for an inspirational incursion. Karen discussed her journey of becoming one of Perths top fashion designers, including her past as a home economics teacher and her triumphant recovery from a bout of breast cancer.

Year 6s Victorious in WACSSA AFL Carnival

On Friday the 12th of May the junior school had their WACSSA afl carnival. They played a total of 5 games against different schools and won all their games. The first game was only won by 1 point coming back from a no goal first half. Congratulations the the year 6 boys.
