On Monday 18 March, the Year 10-12 Interschool cricket team, affectionately known as ‘The Dingoes’ headed off to the finals day of the Graeme Wood Shield. This day saw the top four teams (out of 26) from across the metropolitan area playing semi-finals in the morning, with the grand final and the playoff for 3rd and 4th held in the afternoon.
Simply qualifying for this day is an achievement in itself, but the boys were determined to not just ‘make up the numbers’. After looking down and out in the semi-final against Kent St SHS (a cricket specialist school), the boys stormed home to win by one run on the final ball of the match.
The stage was then set for the grand final against Mazenod College, a school that traditionally we’ve struggled against on the cricket field but have had their measure in the most recent two matches. Mazenod batted first and made a respectable, but achievable score of 123. In reply, the Dingoes again looked down and out until a quick-fire innings of 41 from Ethan F pulled the team right back into the match.
From there, the boys coasted to victory with 11 balls to spare and Ethan was, quite rightly, awarded the player of the match. Winning the shield is an amazing achievement and is our second title in three years after a breakthrough win in 2022 (the boys also finished a respectable 3rd last year). Well done lads, we’re all very proud of you!
