I’m not sure how many Year 12 students across Perth imagine using their Friday nights to hang at school with Teachers, but last Friday, that’s exactly what happened at Swan.
The leadership team organised a Friday night Movie Night, eating pizza, popcorn and lollies! We ordered a whopping 70 Pizzas, had a legitimate popcorn maker and made nearly 100 lolly bags. We spilled across the Maali Mia Theatre seats, with blankets, sleeping bags and bean bags and watched “10 things I hate about you”, a ’90s classic. It was intriguing for myself to watch a film, released around the time I graduated capturing the students which had captured me at their age. I also enjoyed watching the baggy cargo pants and ‘grunge’ style clothes that have come full circle in the current cohort.
It was a privilege being involved with such a great group of students, keen to engage with each other, with staff and just enjoy being at school until late in the evening. As graduation approaches in the coming months, events like this movie night will undoubtedly be etched into the memories of the students. The bonds forged, the laughter shared, and the sense of belonging experienced during these occasions will undoubtedly make leaving school a bittersweet experience.
If these are the memories that the students carry with them as they step into the next phase of their lives, it’s safe to say that Swan has succeeded in making school a place that’s hard to say goodbye to.
