This term the Year 1 students have had the amazing privilege of partnering with Australia Zoo and becoming Wildlife Warriors!
It all began with the students desire to be good stewards of God’s Earth and to ’Save the Animals’. At the beginning of the term the Year 1s had a ‘Wow Day’ to kick off their project. They came dressed as wild animals, park rangers and animal carers ready to engage in a day of collaboration and fun, as they discussed the threats that endangered animals face and what they can do to make a difference.
That afternoon Jess from Australia Zoo emailed to say that Year 1 had become real life Wildlife Warriors! The students came up with ideas in teams for how they could partner with Australia Zoo and support the amazing work they do. During this project, the students have been learning about many important topics across a range of curriculum learning areas including: Swan Christian College Service Learning, Science, Technology and Geography, while exploring topics like conservation, threats to endangered animals and ways to help.
On Tuesday this week, Year 1 will use their technology skills to run an information session for parents and an Australia Zoo Backyard Campout. They have been involved in creating a web platform that has been shared via email and social media with the student’s friends, neighbours and family members. So far, the sponsorship money raised for the Backyard Campout has reached $1,220.81. All funds raised will be donated to support the wonderful conservation work that Australia Zoo does every day of the year.
It has been an amazing term of learning and fun in Year 1. We have been humbled by the support and generosity of our parent community.
