Year 4s Keeping our Swan Valley Beautiful

The Year 4 students recently experienced a workshop conducted by Keep Australia Beautiful about the effect of litter on the environment and particularly on wildlife.

The students were challenged to think about what they could do to address these issues. In response, the Year 4 students had an excursion to collect litter at the Lilac Hill reserve. The students broke into groups and spent about an hour collecting rubbish. They managed to retrieve over 25 kg of waste that had been carelessly dumped.

There was a great atmosphere on the day with all the students engaging enthusiastically with the task. It was quite a surprise to many of the students that so much litter, particularly plastic, was discarded; presenting a serious threat to the wildlife of the area.

The excursion formed part of our K-12 Service Learning program which seeks to give opportunities for students to give back to the community through services, and develop empathy and awareness on the issues that impact our world.
