Year 8 student, Matthew A competed in the State Final U20 épée fencing competition on Saturday 12 November and took home the bronze medal.
His coach, Cathy Morris, commends Matthew for this remarkable achievement:
“Matthew had to work hard in poules. He is also a State accredited epee referee, so not only did he fence, he had to referee as well. He worked hard through direct eliminations, to get to the semi final, which unfortunately he did not win, which left him fencing for bronze. He came up against an opponent who was undefeated in poules, who lost his first match in the semis. He regrouped and refocussed and executed a plan, that saw him win his match, to come away with the bronze medal. A credit to his school, family, club, but most of all, himself!”
We congratulate Matthew on his wonderful achievement!
